Searchlight
is a small, historic mining town located in southern Nevada. As of the 2010 census, the population was 539, but today it's approximately 800. It sits in the desert, about halfway between Las Vegas and Laughlin, only fourteen miles from picturesque Cottonwood Cove on Lake Mohave. It's a quiet, peaceful, scenic, desert town. No big casinos or crowds or traffic jams here. Just lots of wildlife, big blue skies, wildflowers, cactus, hot springs, waterfalls and desert canyons. Searchlight was founded in 1898, and the Quartette Mining Company was formed in 1900. In May of 1902, a 16-mile narrow-gauge railroad was built down the hill to the town's mill on the Colorado River. Many gold and silver mines were in the Searchlight area, and the town reached its peak in 1907 with a population of 1,500 people. Believe it or not, at this time, Searchlight was bigger than Las Vegas. Eventually, however, the grade of ore went down, production costs went up, and mines were closed. By 1927, only about 50 people were left in the town. Today, approximately half the town's population is retired. The others are a mix of ranchers, small business owners, artists and miners. The town of Searchlight is the gateway to Lake Mohave. Things to do in the area include RV camping, fishing, boating, and hiking. Nearby Cottonwood Cove is known as one of the best largemouth bass fisheries in the west.

Searchlight Weather & Climate

The southernmost point of Nevada, in the Las Vegas region, has a subtropical desert climate, typical of the Mojave Desert. Summers are long and hot and winters short and mild. Extremely cold weather is rare, primarily because the mountains east and north of the State act as a barrier to the cold continental arctic air masses. This region has a wide variation in day and night temperatures, due to strong surface heating during the day and rapid nighttime cooling because of the dry air. Even after the hottest days, nights are usually cool. Daily ranges are larger in summer than the winter. June to September is very dry, with very low humidity. Annual precipitation is around 4.5 inches. Winters are very mild, often with daytime highs of 60 degrees. F., and lows in the 40s. Snow is rare in southern Nevada valleys, but common in the mountains of the region.
